VU Amsterdam is now a supporting member of ResearchEquals, sustaining and governing the development of modular publishing. VU Amsterdam joins as the third institutional supporter, alongside Tilburg University and KU Leuven. VU Amsterdam supports new research initiatives through their VU Open Access Innovation Fund. They support open, free and fair publishing alternatives set up by and for researchers.

We recently announced our immediate archival strategy, which will ensure the content on ResearchEquals stays available in case of an immediate, disastrous event (e.g., accidents, business shutting down). In this post, we describe how we implemented this archive strategy, which is run at zero cost using open-source software. The immediate archive is continuously updated and made available using GitHub and GitHub Actions.

When we publish research, we are committing to preserving that research content for as long as we can. At the same time, we need to be realistic and recognize that Liberate Science (”the business”) is still young and it remains uncertain how long we will be around. How do we make sure copies of the research are archived and available in futures that may or may not include the business?

On June 28th, we assembled our supporting community to decide next steps, together (see our original agenda). In this post, we report some key points for those who were unable to attend. Business development The business is progressing steadily, but our revenue is not growing fast enough to cover costs as they are. We had a great quarter, where we covered around 44% of our expenses with our own income.

In February, we ran a pilot ResearchEquals Cohort. Seven sessions spread over four weeks, and five cohort graduates. Regardless of whether we continue, this is a delightful memory already. We met fantastic folk, learned from one another, and had fun. We’ve had some space and time to reflect on this, and with that it’s high time to evaluate and announce when the next Cohort will take place.

KU Leuven is now an inaugural supporting member of ResearchEquals, sustaining and governing the development of modular publishing. As part of their commitment to Open Science, KU Leuven supports sustainable implementations of Open Access and Open Science through the KU Leuven Fund for Fair OA. The fund is usually only available to non-profits, but ResearchEquals’ governance convinced KU Leuven to support a for-profit initiative.

We (semi)recently shipped our integration Research Organization Registry (ROR) for ResearchEquals! ROR is the ORCID for institutions, allowing researchers to easily identify themselves as being affiliated to certain organizations. With this integration, ResearchEquals joins a league of other publishers who are increasing their commitment to complete metadata.
